I. Introduction About Stuttering: |
Stuttering
occurs when the natural flow of speech is interrupted. When a
person involuntarily prolongs sounds, and is unable to produce certain
sounds, or repeats sound, we can say he or she is at risk for
stuttering. Stuttering will usually begin between the ages of
three and six. Onset is usually gradual, but may be quite sudden.

II. What Causes Stuttering? |
The first thing you should know is not to blame yourself if you're a stutterer.
It's not your fault. Stuttering occurs in a consistent four
percent of people throughout the world.
Although we do
not know the exact cause of stuttering, it appears to be the result of a
general tendency to have difficulty in coordinating the speech muscles
in the presence of external demands. The coordination problem is
probably neurological.
A neurological
and developmental perspective may also best explain why more than half
of children who exhibit some stuttering seem to "outgrow" it
before puberty. Physical maturation takes care of the problem.

III. What can be done about it?
These tips are from my personal
experience. Results can be not satisfying or effective. |
A.
Getting Help:
First of all, if you're a stutterer, you're not alone. By getting help,
you will have a better chance of improvement
B. Take a deep
breath:
As
a stutter myself, I feel like running out of breath every time I talk.
Therefore, I try to remember to take a deep breath before I talk.
C. Try not to Replace Words:
When you speak,
you might notice ahead of time that you will get stuck on some words.
Then, your instinct will try to replace a similar word. If you do so,
you avoid to speak that particular word. Stop, take a deep breath and
try to speak that word even if you will stutter.
Then the next time you speak, you will have a better chance not stuttered on
that word again.
C. Talk Slowly:
As a stutterer, you have a tendency
to talk fast so that you can get over it. Well, it's wrong!!! If you
talk fast, you will be stuttering even more than you talk slowly.
